25.5.12

one year later

Almost exactly a year to the day I blogged about test shooting a Canon AE-1. I complained about several things; shortest focal length of 60 cms (simply not good enough for me, my friends) it's inability to render colour accurately and it's all round sluggishness. Hmmm, I sold it on.
However. Time marches on and a month or two ago I stumbled on another Canon AE-1. I admire many photographers who use one, especially when you get results like this, and as for the beautiful pictures that Marion takes…
So in the spirit of perseverance and thinking maybe I just had a dodgy one last time I gave this one a try.

My old complaints I had before with Canon v.1 are still there with v.2. So the lesson learned is this. When you find the tools that work for you, give you the results you want and help you find your voice, no matter what it is you are creating you are bound to flourish and enjoy. If the connection isn't there, move on…à chacun son goût.

  1. Oh thank you Suzie !!!! I really like the last one, those patterns are so so beautiful. It's a very good camera, very easy to handle and it continues to surprise me so go for it, do a lot of pictures, have fun and it will be fabulous :)

    1. Marion, if my photographs taken with the Canon were even half as good as yours I would certainly continue…how do you manage to take such beauties? Although I'm happy to experiment with other cameras I really think I'm pretty much stuck on my beloved Spotmatic, it hits the sweet spot for me!

    2. Ah, if only I knew the secret :)
I mostly shoot with superia 400 & fuji pro 400H. I guess the scans of my lab are quite good also, because when I was leaving in Marseille, the colours and shades were not as strong as they are now. But I am just using it simply, never in the automatic mode. Maybe we have a different lens ?
Thank you for your kind words again for my photographs. Yours are good, keep going ! Do not abandon !

  2. I love this lesson! I haven't tried this camera but I know what you mean about using the tools that work for you, I often try using different cameras but then I just regret not using the ones that I raelly wanted to use...

I do love these results though, the colours especially are lovely and muted.

  3. It's so frustrating when you get the film back and you think "damn, I wished I used the -----" (fill in the blanks)
It's quite interesting the muted colour, but I wonder if that's the film? Now if Marion would just tell us what she uses…….

  4. I'm also a big fan of the last shot! It's one of those moments you don't really even realize: stepping through the door and just glancing at the floor before stepping in. Almost like catching a wave at it's peak.

    1. I find an open doorway just too tantalising, add a beautiful tiled floor and it's too much to resist.

  5. As someone who has not idea what the difference is between one camera and another, I find this post so interesting - and also, I find your photographs stunning.

    1. Thank you Hila! It probably seems a bit odd to non analog freaks how we bang on about the intricacies of lenses, focal lengths and different films. I assure you it's all part of the fun, however!

  6. It truly gives beautiful results. Photos taken with Canon A1 still are worth drooling over, but I'm afraid that I will get to attached to those old school cameras, so I haven't got around to buy one yet.
